Every year, for twenty-five years, my mother and father have taken the same trip to the same small cottage in Scotland. And every single year — without a single exception, we've actually kept count — it starts raining the day they arrive.

For the first many years, they complained about it. I remember phone calls home where my mother, clearly irritated, would announce that 'of course it's raining again,' as though the Scottish weather had a personal vendetta against her. My father packed too little waterproof gear every single time, as if he genuinely believed this year would be different.

At some point, I think around year fifteen, something shifted. They stopped complaining and started betting on it instead, every time they set off. 'This time it'll stay dry,' my father always says. It never does. Now they just laugh, pack an extra pair of socks, and go anyway.
