Fifty years ago, my mother and father stood at the front of a church and promised each other something that must have felt enormous and a little abstract at the time — an entire life. Today we all know exactly what that life has held, because we've been lucky enough to be part of it.

There's one thing about my parents that I don't think anyone in this family has ever put into words, but that everyone here knows: every single Sunday morning, while the coffee's brewing, my father puts an old record on, takes my mother's hand, and they dance in the kitchen. In their slippers. For no reason at all. They've done it since I was a child, and I've never once asked why, because I don't think there's an answer beyond: because they feel like it.

As a kid, I remember finding it slightly embarrassing — parents dancing while you're trying to eat your cereal. Now, as an adult with my own home and my own life, I understand it as the most beautiful thing I know about marriage: that you keep choosing each other, even when no one's watching, even after fifty years, even on an entirely ordinary Sunday.
