60th Birthday Speech – Inspiration and Examples

My dad retired on a Friday in March. By Monday, there was a greenhouse standing in the back garden that none of us had asked for, agreed to, or, frankly, even known he was planning. He'd ordered the materials the week before his last day at work and built the whole thing himself in three days, while my mum stood at the kitchen window shaking her head.

We have never grown a single thing in this family. None of us have green fingers — I've personally managed to kill a cactus, which apparently takes real effort. But there was my dad, standing in his brand-new greenhouse with a packet of tomato seeds he'd researched online, with a determination I hadn't seen in him since he was much younger and had an entire career left to prove himself in.

It struck me that it was never really about the tomatoes. Dad spent forty years solving other people's problems in an office, and now, finally, he had something that was entirely his own, start to finish, with no deadline and no boss. The greenhouse leans slightly in one corner, and half the plants have already given up, but he goes out there every morning with his coffee like it's the most important meeting on his calendar.
