Hannah and I shared a room for fourteen years. There was a strip of masking tape down the middle of the floor that we both completely ignored, and a rule about who got the top bunk that changed depending on who was angrier at the other one that week. What I remember most clearly is every night before an exam, lying in bed convinced my entire life was about to fall apart because of one chemistry test. Hannah, who had plenty of her own studying to worry about, always put her books down, sat on the edge of my bed, and said the same thing every time: 'You've got this. And if you don't — we'll figure it out.' She always said we.
